Marriott Vacation Club on Kauai: Comparing the Island’s 3 Resorts

Kauai is home to three Marriott Vacation Club resorts, but despite being located on the same island, they offer three very different vacation experiences.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club is connected to a large, full-service resort located just minutes from the airport. Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club is a true beachfront vacation ownership resort located directly on Poipu Beach. And Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu offers a quiet, residential-style setting with some of the largest villas of the three.

This article provides detailed information to help you plan your accommodations for your visit to the beautiful island of Kaua’i!

Having three Marriott Vacation Club resorts on one Hawaiian island gives vacationers some excellent options. But it also creates an interesting question:

Which Marriott Vacation Club resort on Kauai is the best?

The answer depends primarily on what kind of vacation you want to have.

In this article, I will compare Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club, Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, and Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu from a guest’s perspective, looking at the factors that can make the biggest difference during a vacation, including location, transportation, beaches, accommodations, pools, dining, walkability, and the overall resort experience.

The Short Version

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club: Best for a full-service resort experience, extensive amenities, convenient airport access, and onsite dining.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club: Best for a traditional beachfront Hawaiian vacation with direct access to Poipu Beach and restaurants and shopping within walking distance.

Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu: Best for guests who want the largest villas, more privacy, and a quieter residential setting.

Marriott Vacation Club Kauai Resorts at a Glance

Before getting into the details, here is a quick overview of the three Marriott Vacation Club resorts on Kauai.

Resort Location Year Built Unit Types Beach Access Best For
Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club Lihue 1995 Parlor, studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom Direct Full-service resort experience
Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club Poipu 2003 2-bedroom Direct Classic beachfront vacation
Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu Lihue 2009 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom No direct beach access Space, privacy, and quiet

Transportation and Rental Cars

One of the more practical differences between these three resorts is how convenient they are to reach and how dependent guests will be on having a rental car.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club

Kauai Beach Club has the easiest arrival experience of the three resorts.

The resort is located approximately 5–10 minutes from Lihue Airport and offers a complimentary airport shuttle. That means you can arrive on Kauai and get to the resort without immediately needing to pick up a rental car.

The resort is also co-located with the Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort, creating a much larger resort environment with restaurants, pools, and other amenities onsite.

There are also several dining and shopping options within walking distance of the resort.

For someone planning to spend most of their vacation at the resort, it is possible to have a relatively enjoyable stay without renting a car. A vehicle is still extremely useful, however, if you plan to explore the rest of Kauai.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club

Waiohai Beach Club is approximately 30 minutes from Lihue Airport and does not offer a complimentary airport shuttle.

However, once you arrive at Waiohai, a rental car is not necessarily essential for every vacation.

The resort is located in Poipu, with several restaurants, shopping areas, coffee shops, and other options within walking distance. This is a major advantage for guests who do not want to get into a car every time they want to go out for dinner or grab a cup of coffee.

A rental car is still very useful for exploring other parts of Kauai, but you can easily spend several days enjoying the Poipu area without driving.

Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Kalanipuʻu is a completely different experience.

Although the resort is located near Lihue Airport, there is essentially nothing within practical walking distance of the resort.

Guests will generally need a car or another form of transportation to reach restaurants, shopping, beaches, and other attractions.

This is one of the important tradeoffs of staying at Kalanipuʻu. The resort offers some of the largest and most spacious accommodations of the three Marriott Vacation Club properties on Kauai, but its quiet and secluded setting also means that guests are more dependent on having a vehicle.

One important distinction: Kauai Beach Club is the easiest resort to reach from the airport and offers a complimentary airport shuttle. Waiohai is the most walkable once you arrive. Kalanipuʻu is also close to the airport, but there is essentially nothing within practical walking distance.

The Beach Experience

This is where the three resorts really begin to separate themselves.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club: Kalapaki Beach

Kauai Beach Club is located directly on Kalapaki Beach, a protected crescent-shaped beach located inside Kalapaki Bay.

Because the beach is protected by the bay, the water is often calmer than what you will find at many other beaches on Kauai.

That makes Kalapaki Beach particularly appealing for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, beginner surfing, and families with children.

The beach also offers a unique view of the activity in Nawiliwili Harbor. Depending on the timing of your visit, you may see cruise ships entering or leaving the harbor.

Kalapaki Beach may not have the same iconic reputation as Poipu Beach, but its protected setting makes it a very convenient and versatile beach for resort guests.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club: Poipu Beach

Waiohai Beach Club is located directly on Poipu Beach, one of the most famous beaches on Kauai. This is the beach that many people picture when they imagine a Hawaiian vacation.

Poipu Beach is popular for swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, and enjoying the sunset. The area is also known for sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles and, at times, Hawaiian monk seals.

For many visitors, easy access to Poipu Beach is the single biggest reason to choose Waiohai over the other two Marriott Vacation Club resorts on Kauai. While I would not necessarily say that Poipu Beach is better than Kalapaki Beach for every activity, it offers a more traditional Hawaiian beach vacation experience.

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu does not have direct beach access. Guests staying at Kalanipuʻu will need to drive to nearby beaches, including Kalapaki Beach. This is an important difference.

Kalanipuʻu is not the resort you choose because you want to walk directly from your villa onto the beach. Instead, you choose it for the villa itself, the space, the quiet setting, and the residential atmosphere.

Beach Experience

Best for the classic Hawaiian beach vacation: Waiohai Beach Club

Best for calm, convenient beach access: Kauaʻi Beach Club

Best for guests who prioritize the villa over the beach: Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Resort Atmosphere and Overall Feel

The three resorts also have noticeably different personalities.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club

Kauai Beach Club feels like a classic Hawaiian resort. It is large, active, and connected to a full-service hotel. Hotel guests and Vacation Club guests are together within the larger Royal Sonesta resort complex, creating more energy and activity throughout the property.

This is a good choice for guests who enjoy having plenty happening around them and want a traditional resort experience.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club

Waiohai Beach Club feels more like a traditional vacation ownership resort. The atmosphere is relaxed and tropical, with lush landscaping and a strong focus on the beach. It is peaceful without feeling isolated, particularly because of the restaurants, shopping, and other activities available in nearby Poipu.

For many people, this is the quintessential Hawaiian vacation resort experience.

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Kauai Lagoons is the quietest and most residential-feeling of the three resorts. There are fewer guests, fewer resort amenities, and less activity than at Kauai Beach Club. In exchange, the resort offers more peace, privacy, and space.

The overall experience feels more like staying in a luxury vacation home than staying at a large Hawaiian resort.

Pools and Resort Amenities

The three resorts offer very different amenity packages.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club

Kauai Beach Club offers the most extensive collection of resort amenities.

  • Large swimming pool complex
  • Children’s pool
  • Children’s waterslide
  • Multiple hot tubs
  • Spa
  • Fitness center
  • Multiple restaurants and bars
  • Marketplace
  • Beach activities
  • Barbecue areas
  • Direct beach access
  • Hotel services

This is the resort I would choose if I wanted to spend a significant amount of time enjoying the resort itself.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club

Waiohai Beach Club offers an excellent selection of amenities without feeling like a massive hotel complex.

  • Multiple pools
  • Children’s pool
  • Relaxation pool
  • Hot tubs
  • Fitness center
  • Marketplace
  • Barbecue areas
  • Direct beach access

For many guests, Waiohai offers the best balance between resort amenities and a more relaxed vacation ownership atmosphere.

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Kalanipuʻu has a smaller amenity package, but that is part of the appeal.

  • Swimming pool
  • Hot tubs
  • Barbecue areas

The resort is designed more around relaxing in the villa, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, using the pool, and exploring the island than spending all day participating in activities at a large full-service resort complex.

The Quick Take

Best for families and activities: Kauaʻi Beach Club

Best overall balance: Waiohai Beach Club

Best for quiet relaxation: Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Comparing the Villas and Accommodations

One of the biggest differences between the three resorts is the type of accommodation available.

Waiohai Beach Club is focused primarily on two-bedroom villas. Kauai Lagoons is focused on large two- and three-bedroom villas. Kauai Beach Club offers the widest variety of accommodation types, ranging from smaller units to two-bedroom villas.

Resort Available Unit Types
Kauai Beach Club Parlor, studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom
Waiohai Beach Club 2-bedroom
Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom

Each resort has similar view types but there are some important distinctions and things to be aware of.

Resort Available Unit Types Important Notes
Kauai Beach Club Oceanfront, Ocean view, Garden View The oceanfront villas are some of the closest villas to the water of any Marriott Vacation Club resort in Hawaii.
Waiohai Beach Club 2-bedroom If a unit has even a sliver of a water view, then it will be considered ocean view. This can lead to some disappointment as some ocean views have distant views over parking lots.
Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu Oceanfront, Ocean View, Island View Oceanfront are the units in Building A that face the water. Ocean view are the 3rd and 4th floor units remaining in Building A along with 3rd and 4th floor in Building B and C. Garden view is 1st and 2nd floor not directly facing the water in Building A along with 1st and second floor of Building B and C.

Looking specifically at the typical two-bedroom accommodations, the differences in size are also interesting.

Resort Approximate Size Maximum Occupancy
Kauai Beach Club 944 sq. ft. – 1,044 sq. ft. Up to 6
Waiohai Beach Club 1,041 sq. ft. Up to 6
Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu Approximately 1,200 sq. ft. Up to 6

In general, the accommodation tradeoff is fairly straightforward.

Kauai Beach Club offers the greatest variety of unit types. Floor plan shows ocean view two-bedroom.

Waiohai Beach Club offers the traditional two-bedroom vacation villa experience in a beachfront setting.

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu offers the largest accommodations and the most space for larger families and groups.

Dining and Walkability

All three resorts offer very different dining experiences outside of the beach and accommodations themselves.

Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club

Kauai Beach Club is the best choice for guests who want a variety of dining options without necessarily having to leave the resort. Not only is the resort co-located with the Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort, guests have access to multiple restaurants and food and beverage options, including Duke’s Kauai, along with bars and a marketplace.

There are also several restaurants and shopping options within walking distance at the Anchor Cove Shopping Center and at Harbor Mall.

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club

Waiohai Beach Club is probably the best choice for guests who value walkable dining and shopping.

While the resort itself has a more limited dining selection than Kauai Beach Club, guests can walk to restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream, and shopping areas in Poipu. Nearby destinations include the Poipu Shopping Village and Kukuiʻula. It’s also a short drive or even a walk to a Kauai originalPuka Dog Hawaiian Style Dogs.

This means that guests can easily enjoy a variety of dining options without getting into a car every time they want to go out.

Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Kauai Lagoons is the least convenient of the three resorts for dining outside the property There is essentially nothing within practical walking distance, so guests should expect to use a rental car or another form of transportation when they want to go out to eat.

For guests who plan to stock up on groceries and cook in their villa , this may not be a great option. The gourmet style kitchen will make cooking a breeze.

Exploring the Island

Kauai Island Map

Shows general location. Map not to scale.

All three resorts can serve as a base for exploring Kauai, but their locations offer different advantages.

Kauai Beach Club and Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu are both located near Lihue, roughly in the center of the island. That makes them convenient bases for exploring in multiple directions.

From either resort, you can plan trips to the North Shore, visit Hanalei and the surrounding area, explore the East Side, travel south toward Poipu, or visit Waimea Canyon.

Waiohai Beach Club, however, has a significant advantage if visiting Waimea Canyon is high on your list.

Located on the south shore, Waiohai is closer to Waimea Canyon than the two Lihue resorts. It is also, of course, ideally located for exploring Poipu and other attractions along the southern coast.

The tradeoff is that Waiohai is farther from Kauai’s North Shore. If you plan to spend significant time visiting places such as Hanalei or exploring the northern coastline, expect a longer drive.

Exploring Kauai

Best for exploring in multiple directions: Kauaʻi Beach Club and Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Best for Waimea Canyon and the South Shore: Waiohai Beach Club

Best for the North Shore: Kauaʻi Beach Club and Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu

Which Marriott Vacation Club Resort on Kauai Is Best?

After comparing all three resorts, I don’t think there is one resort that is objectively the best for everyone. The three Marriott Vacation Club resorts on Kauai are different enough that choosing between them really depends on what kind of vacation you want to have.

If you want a full-service resort with extensive amenities, multiple restaurants, easy airport access, and the convenience of a complimentary airport shuttle, Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club is hard to beat.

If your dream is to wake up near one of Kauai’s most famous beaches, enjoy a traditional vacation villa, and have restaurants and shopping within walking distance, Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club may be the best choice.

And if you prefer space, privacy, and a quieter luxury retreat, Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons – Kalanipuʻu offers some of the largest and most comfortable accommodations of the three.

Rather than asking which Marriott Vacation Club resort on Kauai is the best, I think the better question is:

Which one best matches the kind of Hawaiian vacation you want to have?
